Frequently Asked Laser Questions

What is LANAP  LANAP vs. Traditional Gum Surgery  Laser Dentistry  FAQs  LANAP in the News

Can my gum disease be treated with laser gum surgery?

Almost anyone with gum disease is a good candidate for laser gum surgery. This gum disease treatment does not interfere with any medication nor does it negatively impact existing medical conditions. Even patients with serious conditions, such as diabetes or hemophilia, can safely undergo laser gum surgery. A consultation with our periodontists is the best way to determine whether laser gum disease treatment is right for you.

How long will I need to be off work after laser gum surgery in Kentucky?

Most patients return to work the day following the procedure. Laser gum surgery is scheduled in two sessions, generally divided into left and right sides of the mouth.

How long will I have stitches?

There are no sutures or scalpels used in laser gum surgery in Kentucky. The laser is able to slip into the pocket and selectively target diseased tissue and the bacteria that cause gum disease.

Is it true that laser gum disease treatment can regenerate bone?

Yes. When our periodontists stimulate the bone during your procedure, it incites regeneration of the bone. This effectively reverses the bone loss associated with gum disease, saving teeth that otherwise would have necessitated an extraction.

What kind of laser is used during laser gum surgery in Kentucky?

The Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) utilizes the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser. This is the only FDA-cleared laser protocol for the treatment of gum disease.

Is it safe to have laser gum surgery?

Yes. Doctors Nelson and Lowy have both undergone extensive training and certifications for this innovative protocol and the use of the PerioLase® MVP-7™ laser. They have chosen to offer this gum disease treatment for its safety, effectiveness, and the variety of benefits it offers to patients.
